Making a Difference

This is my friend Casey. Casey is 19, and one of the brightest, funniest, and all-around sweetest people I know. A few months ago, just at the end of her freshman year of college, Casey was diagnosed with cancer. An osteosarcoma on her hipbone, to be precise. She's been undergoing chemo ever since, of course, but in addition, treatment will require the complete amputation of her right leg and part of her hipbone.

So as you can imagine, this is a tough time for her. Her older sister Mandy...who had only just graduated from college herself...has taken it upon herself to take care of Casey. She has been tireless in her efforts. They found and decorated a nice ground-floor apartment, and Mandy has been shuttling Casey back and forth from the hospital for her treatments. They're both going through so, so much. Casey has the more obvious problems, of course, but Mandy, too--her beloved sister is terribly sick, and she herself has had to completely put her life on hold to care for her.

So Casey entered a contest sponsored by Victoria's Secret. She wrote up a lovely essay, excerpted on the site, about why she loves her body despite the cancer, despite the fact that she has no hair, despite the fact that she will lose a leg soon. Winners are determined by the number of votes they receive...and the winners of the contest get a wonderful trip to New York City and days of pampering. We her friends have been posting links to this contest all over Facebook and other places, and she is currently in first place!

But we want to make sure she stays in first place, of course! The contest doesn't end until mid-September. So please, if you wouldn't mind...please go vote for my friend Casey. She and her sister deserve this trip more than anyone else I can think of. And if you could maybe even re-post this on your own blogs, if it wouldn't be too much trouble? On behalf of Casey, I thank you.
